Examples and worksheets were created for this guide. Adapt them to your actual background.
1. Collect what you have already done
List education, course projects, placements, volunteer responsibilities and any summer jobs. For each, record your own contribution, the tools you used and what the work produced.
Choose examples relevant to the vacancy. A group assignment can show planning or analysis, but explain your contribution. Do not add customer responsibility or management if it was not part of the work.
2. Use the right section heading
Use headings such as Education, Projects and Volunteering. State the real dates and education status. Use ’in progress’ if you have not graduated.
A short profile can connect your goal with evidence: ’Information systems student with project experience in Python and SQL, seeking a first junior analysis role.’ This describes a goal rather than a previous job.
3. Give an example you can explain
Replace an isolated skills list with context. ’SQL’ can become ’used SQL to filter and summarize data in a course project’. Use figures when they are real; you do not need a numerical result in every sentence.
The example below shows a student describing a project without implying it was paid client work. It is an original illustration, rather than wording everyone should copy unchanged.
Check before you send
